A Certified Hemodialysis Technician (CHT) performs venipuncture and arterial puncture for the purpose of providing dialysis treatment for a patient. According to the American Society of Nephrology, dialysis is a life-saving process that artificially replaces the functions of the kidney. Hemodialysis involves removing blood from the body and filtering it in a machine. The patient is connected by a tube to the dialysis machine, which continuously draws blood out, cleanses it and removes excess fluid and then returns the blood back to the patient .1

CHTs are responsible for the patient’s preparation and comfort during a dialysis treatment. Technicians are tasked with taking patient history, recording blood pressure, determining pulse rates and monitoring patients throughout the procedure. A CHT may also administer local anesthetics, heparin, and sodium chloride solutions according to the protocol established by the medical director of the hemodialysis clinic or hospital unit and under the immediate supervision of a licensed physician, surgeon, or licensed registered nurse.

Work Environment

Hemodialysis patients must undergo dialysis 3 to 4 hours at least three times a week. A CHT typically performs these treatments at a hospital, dialysis center, or at a patient’s home.

Employment

According to the US Labor Department, healthcare will generate 3.2 million new wage and salary jobs between 2008 and 2018, more than any other industry.2 This is largely in response to rapid growth in the elderly population. Employment in the ambulatory healthcare services including positions for Hemodialysis Technicians is expected to increase by 6% between 2008 and 2016.2

Earnings

According to Payscale.com, on average, a Certified Hemodialysis Technician will earn between $23,000 and $44,000 per year.3 Variables including the state of employment and type of healthcare facility will affect a CHT’s salary. As CHTs gain professional experience, salary and benefits will increase.
